HOW THE DATA-DRIVEN FACTORY, SUSTAINABLE WORKSHOP PROJECT, CAME INTO BEING

Andi-Mec was the Dico Group’s lead company in technology investment. As early as 2016, its leadership decided to initiate the factory’s thorough transformation, planning major investments in three areas: real property, technology, and organization.

The last of these in particular is to be done via standardization of procedures and the availability of new ICT tools (MES – Manufacturing Execution System) capable of helping integrate production processes with business ones in order to make the relationship with customers more inclusive thanks to data sharing.

Thanks to this new model, the DICO GROUP and its Machining business unit (Andi-Mec) was transformed into a Data-Driven Factory. This transition, yet to be widespread in our sector, has helped us gain a competitive edge and develop a unique service for our customers.

FROM FACTORY 4.0 TO MEASURING CO2 EMISSIONS

But our Group did not stop there: to this highly important step, it has added another.
Working to digitize and decarbonize processes is one of the assets of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (Piano nazionale di ripresa e resilienza – PNRR) adopted by the Italian Government in 2021.

To achieve this goal, Andi-Mec has sought partners in the world of scientific research, finding fertile ground in the University of Bologna’s Faculty of Engineering. A collaboration came into being, leading to the creation of a research project aimed at applying an advanced calculation method that can measure the Carbon Footprint of each mechanical detail produced within a machining outsourcer like Andi-Mec.

The research is based on a point-by-point survey for each detail produced, through 4 parameters:

  • energy consumption
  • waste production
  • transport
  • packaging

The perfected system measures the kilogrammes of CO2 introduced into the environment and derived from our productions, comprising the entire supply chain and then tracking consumption, in all phases and in all the processes involved.

OUR SCIENTIFIC PARTNERS ON THE GREEN PATH TOWARDS INDUSTRY 5.0

The project was developed in close collaboration with the University of Bologna’s Faculty of Engineering and with Turtle, a spin off of the University of Bologna.

Its Software Vivacethe first management software able to quantify the environmental, economic, and social aspects of business – provided a reliable assessment of the Andi-Mec measurement model, giving it an excellent score.

From here, more goals can be achieved in environmental terms: from the quality of our products, it is a short step to take – and is one already being taken.

Discovering new frontiers in business becomes achievable thanks to a factory that is no longer “product-driven” but “data-driven” towards the Sustainable Workshop.
Gruppo Dico and Andi-Mec focus on change to help our customers, companies in “packaging valley” and beyond, base their production choices on processes targeting sustainability.
